Early March is not the best time to visit Barr Lake. The lake is
frozen and very few birds are still there. But... If you have patience
you can find something nice there even in March ;) But first you need to
look at the lake from the high ground...
Curious what could you see there? Mostly the trees far away ;)
Trees are growing on the shores around the lake but surprisingly look different depending if you look across the lake...
Even though the day was sunny and windless it
still was cold and no one would like to be active. It was a Sunday after
all and everybody wanted to sleep late!
Seagulls were flying back and forth and once landed (or should I
say iced?) - walked and looked for something to peck. I am really
curious if they were able to find anything to eat on the clear ice?
There were some ducks too, but much fewer than I expected to see...
- What are they doing, these geese? - I could see this question in
the eye of this squirrel who was looking at the birds sitting on the
tree nearby.
We were walking around the lake and admiring the bare trees. We were looking around in hope to see... actually...
We saw it! Bald Eagle flew just above our heads heading to the tall tree not so far away. And... you know... this bird can fly!
Just a second later the eagle glanced between the branches and
found a lovely stick and perched on it. We were really thrilled to see
this beautiful bird (but, honestly, a pair of binoculars would be a good addition
for a walk around the lake).
We continue to walk, looking at the trees and bird nests. Interesting, what bird is making nest like this? Probably need to come back
here later in Spring when they come back from the South and start
working on the new nursery.
The first Bald Eagle was a mature one. But just a few minutes
later a young one flew above us with great speed but in silence.
Gorgeous and elegant bird!
We followed a pathway that brought us far from the coast.
- Follow me, and you will never be hungry!
- Are you sure?
- Sure I am sure!
There was a narrow wedge of unfrozen water and the birds took advantage of it. It wasn't just a few... there were hundreds of geese and ducks swimming and feeding there.
Here is the second Bald Eagle, by the way. And in a few minutes we
would walk closer to it and find out what it was doing (when not
watching jealousy of the aircrafts).
- Ain't I gorgeous? Huh?
- Yes dear... but can you not flap with your wings?
- Where are we going?
- We are having a double date!
- Are you sure if it's a good idea?
- Didn't I tell you that double date means less food for everyone?
Next time listen to me and let's have lunch just the two of us!
- Sure my love, sure...
We returned back to the coast and walked silently to the tree where
we spotted the eagle... And it was still there, perching and looking
around.
...and looking back at the spectators. And... is it me or the eagle is not happy with what it sees?
It was a nice 4 miles walk and we had some fresh and cold air and
the birds entertained us while we were walking. I think we need to do it
again when we are bored, what do you think?
