The history of rock art goes back like... dozens of thousand years. I guess it is the oldest art in the world (at least the surviving art that we can see today). Nobody knows when, where and why people started carving the petroglyphs on the rocks and in most cases the meaning also remains a mystery. Anyway, no one practiced it today (what's a pity, by the way). New forms replaced rock art and, probably, the closest is graffiti art (some might not agree with me). But one day we discovered another way to express ourselves... the one we had no idea existed at all :)
I am talking about chalk art. No, not about silly writings and pictures the kids leaving on the asphalt next to their houses (even though, probably, this kind is closest to rock art ;) ). I am talking about real chalk painting. You can find these images in Europe - we've seen amazing examples in Florence and they were copies of famous paintings made so well, so tourists left plenty of money to support the artists. I guess this can be found in other touristing places as well.
But today I want to talk about something you cannot see often -
like hundreds of paintings covering the surface of the streets in
downtown Denver during Chalk Art Festival. Two or three streets in
Downtown became completely transformed during these two days and dozens
of artists (real artists) use colorful chalks to express themselves.
Some create the masterpieces in just a couple of hours but some take
their time and these pictures are ready by the midday of the second day
of the fest (usually Sunday). Let's walk there and look at these
masterpieces (even not all of them that good, mostly they're just good,
but some...) I think no comments are needed here. Just wanted to point
out - the fest is done by the end of day Sunday and at 7:15PM they wash
all this beauty from the asphalt and it becomes gray again. What's a
pity... but just until next year!
Pictures were taken on June 06, 2010.
