August days in Colorado could be hot and exhausting. The sun's heat is streaming down and people could barely handle it. So one Sunday we just jumped into the car and
drove four or five thousand feet up to Central City.
I like Central
City, it's close enough and it's always 10-20 degrees cooler compared to
downhills. So soon enough we were enjoying the fresh breeze and old
weaving streets of this hundred and fifty years old town. And we
cannot help not going to the place we like the most - the Cemetery. The old
cemetery... or the new cemetery. Stop. Don't let me confuse you and
let me explain... It is an old cemetery, cuz it was mostly used during the first half of the twenty century. And it is a new cemetery, cuz it is the
youngest of all four or five cemeteries in the Central City and Black Hawk
area. See, it is both - old and new.
We like
being there. It looks more like a forest than like a cemetery. Tons of
aspens make a lot of shadow and it's always a pleasure for the eyes.
Flowers covering the ground in the Summer, yellow aspen leaves in the
Fall, fresh green color everywhere in the Spring. Ups... looks like
we've never been to this place in Winter. Maybe it's time to check what
it looks like during the coldest time, huh?
But,
I guess enough words and let's look at the pictures, that should bring
the Summer feeling back. Flowers... Tons of flowers... sometimes I think
why go to Crested Butte if all you need is just drive one hour to see
all these flowers covering the grass?
Aspens. They are real survivors,
they stand the heating Sun and freezing cold, bitter wind and strong
rains. Their bark is bitten and damaged, their crowns are broken down.
But... when it's a nice and warm august day, the aspens are swaying,
shaking and whispering, telling the stories and sharing the memories. I
can sit on the ground and listen to these stories for hours...
This
time we enjoyed nature and paid less attention to the grave
stones (and many of them just amazing!). But, there were some, we cannot
just pass by without spending a minute or two, looking and thinking. The
grave of small John, who spent only three month on the Earth and where
someone put a toy or two on his gravestone.
Or a gravestone of an unknown
man, where one can find all the belongings... Hm... not his, definitely,
but he can own those too, if he lived a hundred years later...
The
pointing finger and "Gone home" words, showing what these people were
thinking about death hundreds years ago. I really like this attitude... ;)
By
the way, this is interesting, how many stones have an exact number of
days the person was living - Lucy E, whose age was 2 years, 2 months and
28 days. Or what about these vanity words - In memory of Jane Ann, wife
of Wm J Stephens, died Dec 15 1891 aged 39 years, 10 months, 8 days. We
know not only her name, but also her husband's ;)
I like the stone for Husband - Albert Chappel, really nice connotation to his name...
Anyway, this is a nice place to escape the heat and enjoy being outside. And we always find something new there, isn't it nice?
Pictures were taken on August 03, 2019.
